GSMGSM is the most prevalent digital mobile telephony standard in the world. Originally devised by a group of European countries, its aim was to create a standard that covered all aspects of the mobile network and operation, so that phones could roam between countries. The economies of scale produced as a result have meant that GSM has now been rolled out in all continents. An essential element of GSM is the use of a smartcard to store information and encryption keys specific to a particular subscriber. The smartcard is known as a SIM, and a mini-sized version is defined, with the same contact layout as an ISO-standard card, to enable use in small devices such as phones. Organisation: ETSI |
