The ACR1281U-C2 from ACS is a 13.56MHz contactless reader device that appears to the host device/PC as a keyboard, and automatically reads the chip serial number (CSN) of each card when presented.
Compatible with MIFARE Ultralight, Classic and DESFire cards as well as NFC tags such as NTAG213, it can read their chip serial numbers, but not any stored data on the card.
The ACR1281U-C2 does not operate as a PC/SC or CCID-compliant smartcard reader, but instead simply returns the card CSN/UID as a string of either decimal or hex numbers, as if they were typed (sometimes known as a keyboard wedge).
A Windows-based configuration tool is available for download from the manufacturer, which allows certain preferences to be set, including the output character case (CAPS lock on/off), bit sequence order (MSB or LSB) and supported UID lengths. It is also possible to define certain extra characters (such as spaces and commas) that should be inserted between the bytes and at the end of the output string.
Operating as an HID-class input device, the reader is compatible with Windows, Linux and Mac OS and supports most ISO 14443 Type A or B cards and tags.
